Series Info and FAQ
What is the event format?
The Skyline Series events use a gross score 2-person scramble format as its base. In this format, both players in a pair each hit a drive, then decided which to play from next. They each place and hit a shot from the chosen position. This pattern is repeated until the hole is completed. The pair then reports a single score for the hole. Each pair competes against the entire field.
What constitutes a team?
A team is comprised of at least 2 pairs of players with no more than 3 pairs representing the team in any given event. These pairs and/or players do not need to be the same at each event. Each team can designate one or two captions who have the final decision on the team make up for each event.
How is a team score calculated?
Team scores equal the sum of the two lowest scores by all the pairs on the team. If a team has 3 pairs with scores of -4, -1 and +3, the team score would be -5, dropping the +3 score.
If a team only has 2 pairs, then no scores would be dropped. The team score would be the two combined.
How good do I have to be to play?
The Skyline Series is open to all who want to join us for the event. Our events have hosted lifelong golfers and new beginners. Anyone that comes out to have a good time is more than welcome.
Do I need a GHIN handicap to participate?
No. GHIN handicaps are not required because we run gross stroke events. Players and pairs do not receive any strokes based on handicaps. This also helps us pay out cash to our winners. GHIN handicaps are only used to provide guidance to players on what division they may have the most fun.
What is included in the entry fees?
Each entry fee entitles the player to participate in the event, including
- Greens fee + cart
- First Tee items (tees, markers, sunscreen, etc)
- All non-optional on course competitions (Long drive, closest to the pin, etc)
- Season-long Moments Pass gifts
Food, beverage and range balls are not guaranteed to be included in each event. Please see individual events for more details.
How does scoring happen during the event?
The Skyline Series uses live scoring provided by Moment Golf via an easy to use webpage. We believe live scoring makes events more exciting and makes it easier to cheer on teammates.
One person from each pair (two total in each group) will need to input scores each hole for themselves and their opponent. These scores will be compared and attested after the round is complete by the tournament coordinator.
How fast are the rounds?
Rounds in our events last about as long as any other 18 hole round; ranging from 4:00-4:45 per round, depending on the conditions and overall pace of the course.
We strongly encourage our participants to maintain pace with the group in front and play ready golf. If pairs are not in each other's way, each should play as soon as they are ready, even if that means alternating shots instead of hitting back to back.
Can I play on more than one team?
Generally speaking, no. You can only play on one team per city per year. This is determined by signing up ON a team.
If you sign up as a free agent or are placed on a team different than the one you signed up for, this does not lock you onto this team. However, if you sign up for another event under this team, then that team would be your team for the season.
Do I have to be on a team to compete?
No, pairs do not have to be on a team to compete. The core of our events is the 2-person scramble. Every pair that registers is eligible for this leaderboard. The team leaderboard is for an extra layer or fun that is completely optional. Entry fees do not change if the pair is on a team or not.
Can I be added to a team or paired up with another player?
Of course! We are happy to help you form or join a team. Team captains have the final say for any additions so we cannot guarantee you a spot on a team, but we will do everything in our power to make it so. When registering, please select the "Free Agent" option and we will do our best to get you on a team.
We can also pair you with another player if you are a single. This process is a bit trickier and is largely dependent on the availability of other singles. If you are interested in joining as a single, please reach out to us directly so we can help.
What on-course competitions/challenges are in each event?
In each event, your entry fee includes the following challenges
- Long Drive by division, age and gender (min of 3 eligible participants)
- Closest to the Pin by gender
Additionally, we aim to have Hole-in-One insurance for anyone in the field of at least $5,000 or more depending on field size
We also run optional skins games at each event that pairs may join if they so choose.
How are place prizes determined?
Place prizes are determined by the number of pairs in each division. The goal is to pay out to the top 20-25% of the field.
For example, in a division field of 16 pairs, the top 4 pairs would receive pay outs somewhere around a 50/30/15/5 split of the total pot for that division.
Pay out places will follow the pattern below for each division
- 4 pairs or less => 1st
- 4-8 pairs => 1st - 2nd
- 8 - 15 pairs => 1st - 3rd
- 16 - 23 pairs => 1st - 4th
- 24-35 pairs => 1st - 6th
- 36 + pairs => 1st - 8th
Are there limits on how much I can win during an event or the season?
Yes. USGA rules on amateur status limit winnings from a single event, inclusive of all contests included in an entry fee and occur during a round, to $1000. USGA regulations do not limit optional competitions or those that do not take place during a competitive round such as our skins game nor do they cover hole in one prizes so long as the shot was over 50 yards.
The IRS requires that prizes amounting to more the $600 should be reported by us and the player. If a player verifiably makes over $600 through our events, we may elect to take this path at the end of the season.
